What to bring to short-term inpatient rehabilitation

You may be feeling a little anxious about your upcoming inpatient rehabilitation. While rehabilitation can cause some stress, you should be rest assured your stay will be quicker than you imagine!

You may feel better if you prepare for your stay. One important thing to do before your stay is to pack your personal items. While facilities may have different items available (for example, some may provide toiletries), here is a basic list to get you started. Check with your facility for their specific list. At the very least, you need a week’s worth of comfortable-fitting clothing.

Here is a basic packing list:

  • Slippers
  • Pajamas and a robe
  • Undergarments (Socks, underwear, and undershirts)
  • Sneakers or shoes with good support
  • Sweatshirts, sweatpants, shorts, and t-shirts
  • An outdoor jacket, hats, and gloves (if it will be cold)
  • Denture care products, if you use them
  • Eyeglasses or contacts and solution if you use them
  • Toiletries and Personal care items, such as deodorant, toothbrush, shaving supplies, and hair products
  • Hearing aids and batteries, if you use them
  • Assistive devices you may use, including a walker, cane, or wheelchair
  • Photographs of family, friends, and pets
  • A favorite pillow or blanket

Other items to bring:

  • A list of medicines you take
  • Prescription plan identification cards
  • The name and phone number of your primary care physician

Consider bringing:

  • Something to do during down time, like a book, magazine, puzzle, or cards
  • Contact information for friends and family, including emergency contacts
  • A journal or note paper and pen
  • Letters and stamps
  • Music player
  • Some cash ($10 or less)

Don’t Bring:

  • Drugs or alcohol
  • Valuables, including jewelry or sentimental items

More than likely if you forget something, friends or family will be able to bring it to you. So don’t stress too much! You’ll be in and out of rehab before you know it.
